Egg recall and Hantavirus
8/28/2010 1:34:43 PM

Vector Control finds Hantavirus in a Palomar Mountain Campground

During rountine monitoring, San Diego Vector Control reports having found a wild brush mouse that was infected with Hantavirus, a potentially deadly disease to humans. The mouse was trapped at Fry Creek Campground on Palomar Mountain.

Hantavirus is a rare but deadly disease that humans catch from infected rodents. About 35% of the people who contract the virus die from it. Hantavirus can infect anyone.  Knowing about the virus and ways to prevent catching it can help protect you.  Hantavirus is an airborne disease.  The infection occurs when airborne virus particles from rodent droppings are inhaled.  The virus does not spread from person to person. In the western United States, deer and harvest mice are the main carriers of hantavirus.

Lightning Strikes on Palomar

Lightning Strikes on Palomar Mountain

This afternoon (Aug 25th), a fast moving summer storm sent numerous lightning down strikes in the area of Palomar Mountain. This storm also produced heavy rain, hail and strong winds.

The Palomar Mountain Volunteer Fire Department along with Cleveland National Forest firefighters, Cal Fire and BLM firefighters investigated 3 small fires caused by the lightning.

The first fire was by Boucher Lookout Tower in State Park, the second by Webber Ranch back on the Palomar Divide Truck Trail, and the third to the North towards the Riverside County Line. Helicopters were used to drop firefighters and water down to the fires.

There is currently no danger to the Mountain and crews will standby to watch for additional fires through the night.

Anyone that spots smoke or fire should call 911 immediately.

Each artist will be able to display their work (whether it is for sale or not) at the Center for the entire Community to see. In return, the Center has some unique and creative art to adorn its walls.

Linda Thorne, one of Palomar Mountain's resident artists is currently displaying some of her beautifully painted pieces at the Center. Each piece is available for purchase, with a percentage of the sale price being donated back to the Center by Linda. The picture you see to the left, was generously donated by Linda to our St Paddy's Day Auction.

Do you, or does an artist you know have some pieces that you'd like to see displayed at the Center? If so, please feel free to contact us for more information.

Painting the Community Center exterior
6/13/2010 6:17:44 AM

LET US (S)PRAY – That is the hand written message on Bruce Cuney’s spray-painting tool box, and ‘answer our prayers’ he did! Bruce very generously spent his entire day spray painting the exterior of the Community Center, not even taking a break or stopping for lunch. Thanks to Bruce and all the other volunteers who graciously volunteered their time, we were able to accomplish ALOT! Take a look below at Bruce Cuney, the masked man, painting the Center while Keith Ronchetti and Bruce Graves test the height of the new sign.

Not only was the exterior of the Center painted, but the trim was started, the footing for the stoop around the back was started, and the Community Center sign is nearly up. Once again, the CCPM is very thankful for all the hard work and effort put in by our volunteers, without you there would not be a Community Center.

Photos of the newly painted Community Center will be available soon

BREAKFAST WITH NEIGHBORS
PMPO Pancake Breakfast and Annual General Meeting - Your CCPM was there.

Pancakes with butter and syrup, delicious sausages, fresh ripe strawberries, orange juice and coffee! Once again the PMPO pancake breakfast was delicious and the service was impeccable. Just look at these three smiling faces (above left) that greeted each and every one of us as our breakfast plates were filled.

As most of you know, every year on the Saturday of memorial weekend, the PMPO holds its Annual General Meeting at 11am. Between 8am and 11am the community comes together for a delicious breakfast at the incredible price of $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for children. Donna Dose (PMPO board member) who organizes and runs this annual breakfast, once again did not disappoint. Many thanks to Donna for all her hard work.

This years PMPO Annual General Meeting was an earmark for the Community Center of Palomar Mountain. It was the first time that Bruce Graves as the new chairperson of the Center was able to give an update to the PMPO board and attending community members. Bruce spoke briefly about the center now being open and available to the public, and then provided everyone with some insight into the history of the center, how it began and how it came to be what it is today.

Earl Walls, the man responsible for the Community Center remodel, followed Bruce with an update on the few remaining jobs that need to be completed. These included painting the exterior (see the scaffolding in the picture to the left), building a stoop with a pathway in the back of the building and installing the outside lighting. In short, we’re just a few short weeks away from being completed! Many thanks to Earl and all his volunteers who continue to work so hard on the Center.

In spite of these few remaining tasks needing completion, the Center is open and available to all residents and property owners on Palomar Mountain FREE of charge. Your new Community Center Board is working hard to make the Center a place for everyone to enjoy. If you would like to schedule a club meeting, group event, community event, board meeting, or just a casual get together at the Center please call Bruce Graves 760.742.3027
